What is MOST important? Reading Comprehension –Make predictions –Find the main idea –Make inferences –Summarize –Find cause & effect relationships –Find word meaning using context clues

What is MOST Important? Math Operations & Problem Solving –50% of test is reading word problems and determining what operation (+, -, x, /) to use to solve it. Strategies –Draw out the problem –Work backwards –Use manipulatives (tools) –Look for patterns –Guess and check –Organize information

How should we prepare? Weeks Before the Test –Set up a place to work that is free of distractions –Ask about what was learned in school each day –Encourage your child to ask questions while studying and show how to find answers –Gather practice test materials and study in small increments

How should we prepare (cont.)? Days Before the Test –Ensure your child is getting proper sleep –Encourage your child to share his/her feelings about the test –Assure your child that this test is only one measure of his/her knowledge

How should we prepare (cont.)? Week of the Test –Ensure a good night’s sleep –Provide a healthy breakfast each day –Arrive to school on time –Avoid absences –Help your child stay relaxed
