NATURAL DISASTERS May 8, 1902. Mt. Pelee erupted on the Caribbean island of Martinique, destroying the capital city of St. Pierre. Up to 40,000 were killed. The day before, a volcano had killed 1,600 people on the nearby island of St. Vincent and five months later Mt. Santa Maria erupted in Guatemala, killing another 6,000. 1900 to present. Malaria is one of the leading causes of death in the developing world even though it is curable and largely preventable. According to the World Health Organization, malaria causes severe illness in 500 million people each year and kills more than a million annually

FASHION Every young girl was expected to wear a corset. Camisoles, petti coats, night gowns and these were all hand sewn. They were mostly edged with lace. Before the world war 1 men wore striped trousers to work with morning coats and hats. For more formal they were a frock coat. But after the war there was a massive fashion style changed especially for women.

TECHNOLOGY In the 1900s people rode mine karts for mining for oil and gold. The first ever diesel engine built by man. Every business document, magazine, and newspaper were typed on a typewriter. The first walkie talkies. The first plane. First vacuum cleaner. First washing machine.

New Zealand In the 1900 John Logan Campbell opened One Tree Hill to the public. In 1906 only four doctors in the Waikato area would take Maori patients. In 1901 there were only 45,500 Maori living left in New Zealand. In 1900 Houses in Auckland had to be pulled down because of rats infested houses and there was a plague. In 1905 New Zealand rugby team tours England and becomes known as the All Blacks!

Instruments A bellowing goat was made in Hungary as it is carved, The curved note makes a continues low note in the drone. The Guitar and the piano was made in the 1900s. The clarinet, trombone and the trumpet was also made in the 1900s.
