Lesson 7.4 Solving Multiplication and Division Equations 2/3/10

Modeling Multiplication Equations Activity Using Algebra Tiles Open your books to p. 332 In your groups, practice and discuss #1-8.

Division Property of Equality (do not have to write down) Dividing each side of an equation by the same nonzero number produces an equivalent equation. Multiplication Property of Equality (do not have to write down) Multiplying each side of an equation by the same nonzero number produces an equivalent equation. Whatever you do to one side of the equal sign, you MUST do to the other side.

Steps to Solving Equations: 1. What are you solving for? 2. What do you have to “get rid of”? 3. How do you “get rid of it”? ***Same steps as in solving addition and subtraction problems.***

Examples: -6x = 84 -6-6 x = -14 1. What are you solving for? x 2. What do you have to “get rid of”? -6 3. How do you “get rid of it”? Since -6x is multiplication, you divide each side by -6.

Examples: = 0.42 3 y = 1.26 1. What are you solving for? y 2. What do you have to “get rid of”? 3 3. How do you “get rid of it”? Since is division, you multiply each side by 3. y3y3 y3y3 1 3

Examples: 1. What are you solving for? z 2. What do you have to “get rid of”? 3. How do you “get rid of it”? Since is multiplication, you divide each side by. 5656 = -30 5656 z 5656 z 5656 Remember – dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal. 6565 6565 1 -6 1 z = -36
