2. Explaining Irony Della and Jim wanted and intended to buy each other gifts for Christmas. These gifts were intended and expected to express their love to each other. The expression of love was to be given through the precious gifts. However the opposite occurred. Della and Jim bought each other useless gifts. They sold and sacrificed the best things they had, Della’s hair and Jim’s watch. Ironically, Jim got Della combs for the hair that she sold in order to get a chain for the watch Jim sold. Both characters ended up sacrificing their prized possessions in order to buy these precious gifts. This was unexpected. Ivan’s intention in crossing the cemetery was to show that he was not afraid, not a coward. However, the opposite occurred. In trying to prove he is not scared, he actually scared himself to death.
