Persuasive Outline: Body Paragraph “Topic Sentences” 7 th Grade ELA
2
Purpose of Topic Sentences Topic Sentences relate directly do your Thesis/Opinion Statement. Topic Sentences are used to support what is being stated in your Thesis/Opinion Statement. A topic sentence guides what your entire body paragraph will be about.
3
How to Create a Topic Sentence Look at your Reasons & Evidence you Brainstormed! Your Reasons are your Topic Sentences! Each of the three reasons you brainstormed end up being the topic sentences for each of your three body paragraphs. Reasons=Topic Sentences Topic Sentences relate to your thesis statement in order to help support your argument. **Use the reasons you brainstormed because they help answer the overall writing topic!**
4
Example Topic Sentence Example Writing PromptExample Topic Sentence If my Reason #1 states: Teaches Responsibility… Then my topic sentence must state that hw teaches responsibility. Example: “ It is important to have homework in school because it teaches students responsibility” Teaches Responsibility Most schools require students to have a set amount of homework from all of their classes. Write an essay discussing whether or not students should or should not have homework in school. **Remember, look at your brainstorm for your topic sentences! They are your reasons! **
5
Now You Try! Now that you’ve seen examples and know where to find the information for your topic sentences (your reasons and evidence brainstorm), try to create your own topic sentence. Remember, you have three body paragraphs so each body paragraph will need a topic sentence! You’ve already done the hard part of brainstorming, so use that information to guide your body paragraphs!
