For the week of… Nov. 16-20, 2015 For the week of… Nov. 16-20, 2015 Kindergarten News LiteracyMath -Letter Ii and the short vowel sound it makes in words (igloo, rip). We will also study the long vowel sound (when “Ii” says its own name, as in ice and nice). -Rhyming, beginning, and ending sounds in words -Sight Words: there While reading Inch by Inch, we will be focusing on plot (main events in the beginning, middle, and end). In Writer’s Workshop, we are working hard to write the sounds we hear in words. We will continue exploring 2 and 3 dimensional shapes this week. 2-dimensional shapes: triangle, rectangle, circle, oval, square, trapezoid, rhombus, hexagon 3-dimensional shapes: Sphere, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid, triangular prism, cylinder, cone ScienceThemes We will be exploring insects this week! Letter Ii Insects Thanksgiving/Pilgrims/Native Americans Seasons (Fall) and Senses Social Studies/Life SkillsStar of the Week Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about Native Americans, Pilgrims, and the First Thanksgiving. Braden Spietz Homework: *Please check the back of the newsletter for more information. -Practice sight words. -Read to your child each day and document minutes on the RAH Calendar. -Assist your child in finding or thinking of 5 words that begin with “i” (insect), and 5 words that have the short “i” vowel sound in the middle (hip, fin). Have your child write these words and turn them in with the homework slip. -Have your child cut apart the attached letters to create –ip words. Please have your child tell you the sounds in each word by chopping the sounds on their arm. Then have them blend the sounds together to read them smoothly. Also, have your child write each –ip word. -I am thankful for…Please assist your child in completing the sentence, but let them do the spelling on their own by writing the sounds they hear in words. Also, we’ve talked about not naming toys as something we are thankful for but instead focusing on things that mean so much to us we would never want to live without them (family, pets, friends, a cozy home, hugs, etc.). Please assist your child in completing this week’s homework. Detach and turn in this lower section before the end of the week to receive a “Smiley Guy’ hand stamp. Upcoming Events: Nov / DecCanned Food Drive Please send in canned food and nonperishable items for those in need. We collect it right here in the classroom. Wednesday, Nov. 25Kindergarten/Pre-1 st Thanksgiving Day Program: “Pumpkin Pie with Pilgrims” 9 am This is a special Thanksgiving celebration. We will perform some great songs! If you are unable to attend, please try to make arrangements for someone to take your place so your child has a loved one to share their pie with. Thank you.
