Determine sin θ, cos θ, and tan θ. Then, determine θ. θ 12 20
3
SOH CAH TOA only works with right triangles!! So, what do we do if we have an acute or an obtuse triangle??
4
SOH CAH TOA – for right triangles only! Law of Cosines for non-right triangles Law of Sines Today: Law of Sines (sect. 5.4)
5
Use capital letters to name angles: A, B, C Use lower case letters to name sides: a, b, c Side a is opposite Angle A Side b is opposite Angle B Side c is opposite Angle C It doesn’t matter which side or angle is which, as long as you consistently match sides and angles opposite one another!!
6
A B C c a b
7
A B C c a b h
8
A B C c a b k
9
If ΔABC has sides a, b, and c, then: The reciprocal is also true: Use this version when solving for a side. Use this version when solving for an angle.
10
The Law of Sines can only be used when triangles are labeled in certain orders AAS ASA SSA (we will learn this next time!)
11
Figure out if the triangle is AAS, ASA, or SSA. Label angles and sides (A, B, C, a, b, c) When using the Law of Sines, you only need to use 2 ratios of the proportion at a time!!
