FST Section 5.4

 Determine sin θ, cos θ, and tan θ.  Then, determine θ. θ 12 20

 SOH CAH TOA only works with right triangles!!  So, what do we do if we have an acute or an obtuse triangle??

 SOH CAH TOA – for right triangles only!  Law of Cosines for non-right triangles  Law of Sines  Today: Law of Sines (sect. 5.4)

 Use capital letters to name angles: A, B, C  Use lower case letters to name sides: a, b, c  Side a is opposite Angle A  Side b is opposite Angle B  Side c is opposite Angle C  It doesn’t matter which side or angle is which, as long as you consistently match sides and angles opposite one another!!

A B C c a b

A B C c a b h

A B C c a b k

 If ΔABC has sides a, b, and c, then:  The reciprocal is also true: Use this version when solving for a side. Use this version when solving for an angle.

 The Law of Sines can only be used when triangles are labeled in certain orders  AAS  ASA  SSA (we will learn this next time!)

 Figure out if the triangle is AAS, ASA, or SSA.  Label angles and sides (A, B, C, a, b, c)  When using the Law of Sines, you only need to use 2 ratios of the proportion at a time!!

 A = 31.6 o, C = 42.9 o, and a = 10.4 meters  Solve for all missing measurements

 C = 102.3 o, B = 28.7 o, and b = 27.4 feet  Solve for all missing measurements

 A = 43 o, B = 98 o, and c = 22 feet  Solve for all missing measurements

 B = 104 o, C = 33 o, and a = 18.1 ft  Solve for all missing measurements

 A = 16 o, B = 98 o, and c = 8.4 inches  Solve for all missing measurements
