RHETORIC ARISTOTLE Aristotle (384 – 322BCE) is the most notable product of the educational program devised by Plato. Aristotle wrote on an amazing range of subjects, from logic, philosophy, and ethics to physics, biology, psychology, politics and rhetoric.

LOGOS, ETHOS, PATHOS

RHETORICAL TRIANGLE Every communication is essentially a trilateral relationship. Each point of the triangle influences the others, and all are influenced by the context of the communication. Each point of the triangle bears some responsibility for the success of the communication, and each point of the triangle corresponds with one of Aristotle’s three appeals.

LOGOS Logos is an argument based on facts, evidence and reason. Using logos means appealing to the reader’ sense of what is logical, reasonable. – Facts – Case studies Example: – Statistics 37% more effective than the – Experiments competition. – Analogies – Anecdotes – Authority voices – Logical reasoning

ETHOS Ethos is an argument based on character. Using the ethos means the writer or speaker appeals to the audience’s sense of ethical behaviour. The writer or speaker presents him or herself to the audience as credible, trustworthy, honest and ethical. – Trustworthiness – Credibility – Reliability – Expert testimony – Reliable sources – Fairness

PATHOS Pathos is an argument based on feelings Using pathos means appealing to reader’s emotions and feelings. Higher emotions:Lower emotions: – Fairness- Anger – Love - Greed – Pity- Revenge
