English Course Goals Critical Thinking Skills Analysis of Texts and Ideas, Cross-Disciplinary Thinking, Uncovering Assumptions of Authors/Texts, Detecting Bias, Synthesizing and Comparing, etc. Reading Skills Developing “Reading Muscles” Developing Strategies for Understanding Various Kinds of Texts/Genres - Literacy Writing Skills Claims-Based Essays, Close Readings, Researched Argument and Inquiry Papers, Narrative, Argumentative, Expository Modes, Creative Writing (tied to Curriculum)

English Course Goals Speaking/Discussion Skills Seminars, Online Forums, Presentations Technology Familiarity with Google Apps, Turnitin, Web- based Course Management Tools, NoodleTools, Electronic Databases, etc. Time Management Collaboration (as part of previously mentioned skills)

English Curriculum Writing Analytically – offers the core instructional strategies for all grades, emphasis on reading, thinking and writing analytically Fiction – various novels, plays, short stories, poems Non-fiction – various essays, news articles, critical commentaries, works of creative non-fiction (e.g. memoir), etc. Other types texts are part of the English curriculum – films, visual art, music, political cartoons, ads, etc.

Courses 10 th Grade English 10 Pre-AP English 10 (open enrollment) Similarities and Differences: Similar Curriculum – fiction and non-fiction mix, some shared texts, similar types of writing assignments Pre-AP goes deeper (depth over breadth!), focusing on more complex tasks with same texts and sometimes reading more complex texts, more writing-intensive Pre-AP 10 is NOT a repeat of Pre-AP 9

Offerings 11 th Grade English 11- American literature, fiction and non-fiction, multiple genres AP English Language and Composition 11 (open enrollment) Focus on non-fiction with some American lit. included Aligns to an introductory college-level rhetoric and writing curriculum Students develop evidence-based analytic and argumentative essays Students read and analyze the rhetorical elements and their effects in non-fiction texts, including graphic images as forms of text, from many disciplines and historical periods
