Modern Day Slavery Slavery in the world is still rampant, and is the second fastest growing criminal industries in the world, after drugs. Each year, hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children are tricked into becoming slaves. There are more people enslaved today than there were in living in the entire world in 1800. Over 30 million people are living in slavery across the globe. Over 800,000 people are enslaved every year. In the United States alone, a person is abducted into slavery every 10 minutes. In the entire world, a person is abducted into slavery every 30 seconds.
4
What is modern-day slavery currently known as?
5
But What Is Human Trafficking? Human Trafficking is the trade of humans for purposes such as forced agricultural or industrial labor, the harvesting of organs, or most commonly, sexual slavery. Trafficking is a lucrative industry, representing an estimated $32 billion per year in international trade, a huge amount out of the estimated annual $650 billion for all illegal international trade.
7
Where does this happen? Human slavery is everywhere. While predominant in LDC’s (Less Developed Countries), there is human trafficking in every country in the world. Enslavement of other human beings has been common since early history, when slaves were the main laborers. This practice was never individual to one area, it is a universal problem, which makes it a pressing issue for the UN.
9
But what can we do as Americans?
10
How To Help What can the United Nations do to help stop the atrocity of modern day slavery? Better education in LDC’s/NIC’s. Less Developed Countries and Newly Industrialized Countries are poorer countries of the world and lack educational resources and economic prowess. B Increased job opportunities (economic growth) in LDC’s/NIC’s. A huge reason why so many people are trafficked out of these countries is because there is no other way to make money. New jobs will lessen the necessity for human trafficking because their money can come from their career instead. Agents to infiltrate the groups facilitating human trafficking and to get the local police to arrest them, as well as use technology to secure borders to crack down on illegal immigrants. Victims are often smuggled from border to border, and increased security can save hundreds of thousands of people.
11
Be Aware, Spread Awareness What can you as an American do? Be Aware. Most enslaved people in the United States were abducted runaways. Be cautious in shady areas. Dallas is one of the biggest human trafficking cities in the country. Tell Others. Tell others how slavery has not disappeared with modern society. Inform yourself and your peers on how to help prevention of trafficking and helping victims. Donate money to foundations that improve education in poor areas. Volunteer at shelters to help people who have been abused/escaped from human trafficking. Often victims suffer from PTSD and have trouble reintegrating themselves into society. Report. If you have any suspicions of human trafficking happening near you or to someone you know, call the local police.
