Lesson 1 – Trafficking and Slavery This lesson looks at what human trafficking is and introduces students to the idea that it can be stopped, by looking at heroes who have worked to end human trafficking and modern slavery. Learning Objectives: To understand what human-trafficking is and its links with slavery. To know how others have fought/are fighting against slavery and trafficking. To consider how we can help end human trafficking.

What does a hero look like? Questions: 1. What are your superhero's special powers? 2. What does your superhero look like? (Costume? Special equipment?) 3. What will your hero do with their special powers? 4. Does your hero have an enemy? 5. Should your superhero protect people with their powers? Why or why not? 6. How do you think a superhero should behave?

What is slavery? Slavery is where one person is owned by another and is under their control. Often slaves are forced to work for no pay.

Human trafficking is to be deceived or taken against your will, bought, sold and exploited. Exploitation = treating someone unfairly so as to benefit from their work.

A Global Marketplace

Human Trafficking is a system based on greed, control and power. It has a global market place where people are the product and everyone has a price tag.

This crime is so awful that everyone instinctively struggles to admit it exists. Society often doesn’t listen, business often doesn’t see and governments often don’t want talk about it. Those trafficked are often invisible, always powerless, and are put to work.

The answer is for individuals and society to see this crime, listen for it, talk about it, and take action to disrupt this global system!

What is ‘Fairtrade’? Fairtrade CERTIFY lots of different products. This means they ensure the products are produced in a FAIR way.

When you SEE THIS: You can KNOW THIS: The Farmer(s) received a fair wage for their work. That working conditions are being improved. Measures have been taken to monitor that no child labour was used. Money has been put into local community services like schools. You are supporting companies that advocate for ethical practices. M Certified ‘Fairtrade’ Products
