Regular Preterite The preterite is a past tense. It is used to express a completed past action. It is used to state the beginning or the end of an action. It is used to express a series of completed past actions. It is used to express a past action completed at a specific time, or a specific number of times.

Forming the Preterite Regular –ar verbs Example: hablar hablar Hablé Hablaste habló Hablamos hablaron

Forming the Preterite Regular –er verbs Example: comer Comí Comiste comió Comimos comieron

Forming the Preterite Regular –ir verbs Example: vivir Viví Viviste vivió Vivimos vivieron

Regular Preterite -er and –ir verbs have the exact same preterite endings The nosotros/as forms of –ar and –ir verbs are the same as the present tense Written accent marks appear on the yo and él/ella/Ud. forms
