Nuts and Bolts Deponents have THREE (3) PRINCIPAL PARTS: 1 ST PART: 1 ST SINGULAR PRESENT (conor – I try) 2 ND PART: PRESENT INFINITIVE (conari – to try) 3 RD PART: 1 ST SINGULAR PERFECT (conatus sum – I tried)

PERFECT PARTICIPLE THE PERFECT PARTICIPLE OF A DEPONENT VERB TRANSLATES ACTIVELY conatus – having tried regressus – having returned secutus – having followed

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT THESE ARE TRANSLATED ACTIVELY.

IMPERFECT TENSE The imperfect tense looks like the regular imperfect passive forms. -bar, -baris, -batur, -bamur,- bamini, -bantur Vowels before endings are also the same. 1 st (a), 2 nd (e), 3 rd (e), 3 rd -io (ie), 4 th (ie)

The Deponent Verbs (or, at least some of them) 1 st Conjugation: conor, conari, conatus sum – to try moror, morari, moratus sum – to delay, remain, stay 2 nd Conjugation: vereor, vereri, veritus sum – to fear, be afraid

More Deponents! 3 rd Conjugation: collabor, collabi, collapsus sum – to collapse consequor, consequi, consecutus sum – to overtake loquor, loqui, locutus sum – to speak, talk proficiscor, proficisci, profectus sum – to set out sequor, sequi, secutus sum – to follow
