What actually is PCOS? How many women have PCOS? What are the symptoms of PCOS? PCOS usually does not come alone. What causes PCOS PCOS is treatable and complications preventable.

PCOS= Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome It is associated with rise in male hormones and subsequent inability to have regular menses and conceiving becomes a problem. These issues start affecting one’s life very early.

Very common hormonal problem of teens and females of reproductive age group (15- 49). Every 10 th woman of childbearing age has PCOS. It can occur in girls as young as 11-12 years old.

1. Irregular menses. Typically cycles more than 35 days and less than 10 menses in an year. 2. Androgens (Male type Hormones) in excess. ◦ Excess hair growth on face, chest, back (hirsutism) ◦ Loss of hair on the scalp (alopecia) ◦ Acne ◦ Blood test detects raised male hormone levels 3. Polycystic Ovaries found on Ultrasound 4. Any of the above two make the Diagnosis of PCOS

These complications make this disease as a lifelong problem with serious dent in quality of life. Hence, it is crucial to catch this illness early so as to not only take care of menses problems or infertility problems but also to delay or prevent serious complications later in life.

GENETICS Women with PCOS are more likely to have a mother or sister with PCOS. HORMONAL PROBLEMS In PCOS women, the ovaries make more androgens than normal. High levels of androgens affect the development and release of eggs during ovulation. INSULIN is supposedly linked to PCOS. Many women with PCOS have too much insulin in their bodies as they are not able to use it (Insulin Resistance). Excess insulin leads to excessproduction of androgen by Ovary. High male hormone levels can lead to: ◦ Excessive hair growth ◦ Weight gain ◦ Acne ◦ Inability to ovulate

If you suspect that you have symptoms suggestive of PCOS then your Gynaecologist should be your first point of contact. She will get you thoroughly investigated. REMEMBER It is a disease that requires lots of LIFE STYLE modifications. If you are obese with PCOS then reduction in weight by 5-10 % will yield excellent results as far as fertility chances are concerned. In motivated patients..Dietary Changes and exercise are sufficient for this reduction.

Menstrual Problems can be handled with the help of Medications, Cosmetic problems may require specialist treatment by Cosmetologist. For ANOVULATION there are various medications as well as surgery.

OVARIAN DRILLING is a procedure that can be done Laparoscopically and patient can be discharged even same day. In almost 2/3 rd patients ovulation problem can be resolved by this simple procedure.
