Irony You’ve probably been doing it wrong…

What is Irony? Irony is about expectations. Irony: the opposite of what is expected. 3 kinds of irony  Verbal  Dramatic  Situational

Definition: a contrast between what is expected and what actually happens Situational: something happens that we wouldn’t expect to happen Example: a fire station burns down Dramatic: the reader knows something the character does not Example: Snow White is unaware that the beautiful red apple is poisonous, but we know that the witch is trying to kill her. Verbal: what is said is different than what is meant Example: You tell someone to break a leg, but you mean for them to have good luck.

SITUATIONAL IRONY  The teacher’s daughter is a high school drop out.  The bank manager’s wife gets caught stealing money.  The chef won’t eat his/her own cooking.  The barber always needs a hair cut himself.

Dramatic IRONY  In all of the Friday the 13 th movies, we know Jason is in the woods, but the characters do not. When they go out into the woods, we are afraid for them because we know that they are in danger. We scream for them to run, we get excited when they fall, we cringe when we know that Jason is right behind the tree.

Verbal IRONY  When you appear to be sick and someone asks you if you’re okay. You say “Of course!” But in the meantime you are vomiting and fainting.

Identify the following examples of irony as situational, dramatic, or verbal… 1. Roman breaks a date with his girlfriend so he can go to a ball game with the guys. At the concession stand, he runs into his girlfriend with another guy.

A: SITUATIONAL IRONY  We do not expect Roman to see his girlfriend with another guy.

SITUATIONAL IRONY We don’t expect a FITNESS CENTER to have an escalator because they cause you to burn LESS calories.

3. You are watching a horror movie. You know that the boogey man is waiting for the main character in the closet, but the character doesn’t know and unknowingly opens the closet door.

A: DRAMATIC IRONY  You, as the audience, know something that the main character does not.

Coca-Cola Bottle !!

A: Situational Irony  You wouldn’t expect to see a Pepsi delivery man drinking a Coke!

5. As you walk outside into the pouring rain, your friend sarcastically comments, “What lovely weather we’re having today.”

A: VERBAL IRONY  Your friend is saying that it is lovely weather but what she means is just the opposite. It is a very dreary day.

SITUATIONAL IRONY The guy is calling the protestors stupid, but he spelled, “morons” wrong!

 7. A police station gets robbed.

A: SITUATIONAL IRONY  We wouldn’t expect a POLICE STATION to get robbed. They investigate robberies!

SITUATIONAL The van drove into a “School of Safe Driving.” Hahahahahaha! We wouldn’t expect that.

9. Your date for the school dance shows up in ripped jeans and a stained t-shirt. With a smirk, you say, “Oh! I see you dressed up for the occasion.”

A: VERBAL IRONY  What you’ve said is different than what you mean. You mean that your date hasn’t bother to dress up at all, but that isn’t what you said!

SITUATIONALIRONY  It is ironic that a McDonald’s sign is beside a sign about childhood obesity? Absolutely!!

11. When watching a talk show, the audience knows why a person has been brought on the show. However, the person in the chair does not know that they are going to be told some devastating news.

A: DRAMATIC IRONY  The audience knows information that a character does not! (We know why the person has been brought on the show, but they don’t!)

SITUATIONAL  Would you expect someone that lives here to specialize in complete home repair?

Coincidence vs. Irony: Let’s not confuse the two… Coincidence is when two or more events happen of striking similarity at one particular time by accident or by chance. Coincidence is difficult to explain as it can happen entirely as a result of chance.time  For example: - Two female celebrities wearing the same gown to the Academy Awards function. - Two classmates, who were not in touch with each other, meeting each other at an airport after ten years of time has gone by. Summary: 1.Coincidence is the happening of one or more events which produce results which were unexpected; irony refers to different singular events happening where the result is exactly opposite of what was expected literally. 2.Coincidence is not differentiated into types. Irony is differentiated into different types; verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. 3.Coincidences happen purely by chance, and they are very difficult to explain. Some ironies happen by chance like situational irony, but others like verbal irony are intended by the speaker to mean exactly the opposite of what he is saying because it is fully intended. Some actions are also ironic and they may or may not be intended.

Review Something that is ironic is unexpected. If unexpected by a character, it’s dramatic. If unexpected by everyone, it’s situational. If it’s sarcasm, it’s verbal.

An old man turned ninety-eight He won the lottery and died the next day It's a black fly in your Chardonnay It's a death row pardon two minutes too late Isn't it ironic... don't you think It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye He waited his whole ---- life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down he thought 'Well isn't this nice...' And isn't it ironic... don't you think Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you When you think everything's okay and everything's going right And life has a funny way of helping you out when You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up In your face It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures It's a traffic jam when you're already late It's a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife It's meeting the man of my dreams And then meeting his beautiful wife And isn't it ironic... don't you think A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think...
