Independent Variable ◦ the value being manipulated or changed Dependent Variable ◦ Depends on x. ◦ It’s the result of the independent variable being manipulated Equation of a line (linear equation) ◦ y=mx+b
3
Total cost of gas, number of gallons of gas Perimeter of a square, length of a side Number of slices of bread, total calories Speed of car, distance traveled Cost of pencils, number of pencils

After figuring out our independent and dependent variables, we can write let statements. Let statements say: “Let x be______” and “Let y be____” This will help us write the equation that matches our word problems. Example: ◦ Total cost of gas, number of gallons of gas Let x be #of gallons of gas. Let y be total cost of gas.

Sam is making a long distance phone call to his grandmother. The cost y (in dollars) of making a long distance phone call for x minutes is y=0.25x+2. How much would Sam pay if he was on the phone with his grandmother for 8 minutes? ◦ What is my independent and dependent variables? ◦ Write “let statements.” ◦ What is my slope? What does it mean? ◦ What is my y-intercept? ◦ How much would he pay for 8 minutes? Hi Sam!

Miles and Javon own a cheese factory. They charge a flat fee of $50 for each shipment of cheese and $2 per wheel of cheese. How much money will they make if 34 wheels of cheese are bought? ◦ What is the independent variable? ◦ What is the dependent variable? ◦ Write “let statements.” ◦ Write an equation that models this problem.

Emily and Christina have a gardening business. They charge $5.00 a visit and $2.00 an hour for their services. ◦ What is the independent variable? ◦ What is the dependent variable? ◦ Write an equation to show this scenario. ◦ How much would they make for a two hour visit? Let’s make some money ladies!

Noah Francis and Brandon Starr own a sports store. At their store, it costs $7 per hour to rent rollerblades plus $10 for safety equipment. ◦ What is the independent variable? ◦ What is the dependent variable? ◦ Write an equation to model the scenario. ◦ Make a table to show the cost of renting the rollerblades up to 6 hours. Aren’t we cool, Elsa? Chyeaaa

Andrea bought $209 worth of t-shirts. After a week, she decided that she didn’t like the shirts anymore and wanted to sell them for $9.50 each. ◦ Write an equation. ◦ Use your equation to find how much Gabby will make after selling 15 shirts. ◦ How many shirts does Gabby need to sell to get her money back? Why doesn’t Gabby want me anymore?

y=x Verify the coefficient of your independent variable. Will it be a positive relationship or negative relationship? Pick any school appropriate topic. Write let statements for x and y. Write your scenario. Check to make sure it fits your equation.
12
Create word problems for one of the following: ◦ y=x+2 ◦ y=2x+2 ◦ y=(1/2)x ◦ y=-x+1 ◦ y=3x+1
