The Bystander Effect “a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases where individuals do not offer any means of help in an emergency situation to the victim when other people are present” a.k.a. Genovese syndrome

History of the Bystander Effect Catherine Susan "Kitty" Genovese March 13th, 1964: Kitty was coming home from work early in the morning when she was brutally stabbed. Thirty- eight witnesses passed by her and ignored her cries for help. On man explained, “I didn't want to get involved.”

How Does This Relate? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0O Nij6eB-k “Take it somewhere else” “She deserves it” “She’s getting what she asked for” “She’s looking around like, ‘Is anybody gonna help me?’”

How Does This Relate? -cont- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlFA d4YdQks “Good for her!” “He probably deserved it.” “Female aggression is seen as not very important.”

Food for Thought Does cheating condone violence? Is it okay for a woman to hit a man for that reason, or vice versa? Just because the victim looked guilty, can you determine as a bystander that the violence is justifiable? What about the cop?

Quick Reminder Instead of having our meeting next week, the lecture on Thursday will count as the meeting. I’ll be there to join all of you. Also, all the powerpoints will be uploaded to the collegiatelink, and we’re on both Facebook and Twitter.
