Make a plan Consider how you will look after data: –During the project –At the end of the project Explain it –Add documentation and metadata to your files, collections etc, as you go Store it safely –Make sure data is kept safely during a project and preserved at the end Share it –Make data available for other researchers to use in the future

Good habits to cultivate Organise your data. Consider: -norms in your discipline/research group -personal preference Give your files sensible names -Don’t forget automatically-generated file names Back up regularly -Set reminders Document, label and tag as you go -Make sure you include ‘obvious’ information Be careful about using copyrighted material -Get copyright clearance on 3 rd party copyrighted material as you go along

Getting started with a plan Your Data Management Plan won’t be perfect It is not a static document Think about key issues that might affect your data… –…while you work on them –…in the future Ask for advice if you’re uncertain Talk to repositories and data centres at the start of the project to make preserving your data easier
