1
Potential and Kinetic Energy Understanding the cyclic nature of potential and kinetic energy
3
Work and Energy O Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. O Measured in Joules O When one thing does work on another thing, some energy is transferred to the second object.
4
Power and Energy O Power is the rate at which work is done. O Since the transfer of energy is work, then power is the rate at which energy is transferred. O Power = Energy Transferred/Time
5
Kinetic Energy O The energy an object has due to its motion O Factors Affecting KE O Mass and Velocity O Calculating KE O KE = ½ X Mass X Velocity 2 O Changing velocity will have more affect on the KE than changing its mass O Double the mass = double the KE O Double the velocity = four time the KE
6
Potential Energy O Stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object O Gravitational Potential Energy O Related to an object’s height O Gravitational Potential Energy = Weight X Height O More weight or height = greater Gravitational Potential Energy O Elastic Potential Energy O Energy dealing with stretch or compression
8
Mechanical Energy O Form of energy dealing with position and motion of an object O Also as the ability to do work. More ME an object has the more work the object can do. O Combination of its potential energy and Kinetic energy O ME = PE + KE O Sometime the ME can be only KE or PE
