WHO WAS GUY FAWKES? He was born in York on 13th April 1570 and died on 31st January 1606 He was also known with the name as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries He was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot in 1605. His mother married a recusant Catholic. He later converted to Catholicism and left Great Bretain for the continent, where he fought in the Eighty Year’s War on the side of Catholic Spain against Protestant Dutch reformers. He travelled to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England but was unsuccessful.

HISTORY He and other people planned to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. Guy Fawker’s plot was to blow up the houses of parliament with the king inside. But one of the Catholics sent a letter to one of the lords telling him to stay away from the houses of the parliament on November 5th.But the letter ended up with the king.So the king sent his Guards down to the cellar to find Guy Fawkers. Over the next few days, he was questioned and tortured, and eventually he broke. Immediately before his execution on 31 January, Fawkes jumped from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck, avoiding the agony of the mutilation that followed.

BONFIRE NIGHT It was a public holiday until the late 1800s. The word 'guy' first entered the English language with this meaning, but then went on to mean any male person. In this festivity, there are bonfires, fireworks, firecrackers and traditional dishes and is burning effigies or guys on a bonfire. British people sing: "Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot. " It is also celebrated in some of the countries that were part of the British Empire like Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Antigua and Barbuda…

TYPICAL DISHES There are many typical dishes of the date as caramel apples, jacket potatoes (baked potatoes, traditionally cooked in the fire), black peas with vinegar, or bonfire toffee (caramel Bonfire)
