I. The Credential Programs The Cal State San Marcos School of Education offers several distinct credential programs. 5

Prerequisite Coursework All three of these courses must be successfully completed prior to admission to credential programs in CSUSM School of Education. EDUC 364 – Cultural Diversity and Schooling EDUC 350 – Foundations of Teaching as a Profession EDUC 422 – Technology Tools Teaching and Learning or electronic portfolio Our recommendation as found in the “Credential Programs Pathway Checklist for CSUSM Undergraduates”, is to take ED 364 in freshman or sophomore year, take ED 350 in sophomore or junior year, take ED 422 in junior or senior year. (Please see the pathway checklist for more details.) 11

CBEST: Basic Skills Exam TEST DATES January 11, 2014 March 8, 2014 May 3, 2014 Check website for additional dates and registration www.ctcexams.nesinc.com Year-round CBEST computer-based testing is available on the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. PLAN AHEAD and REGISTER EARLY When should I take CBEST? Our recommendation as found in the “Credential Programs Pathway Checklist for CSUSM Undergraduates”, is to take the CBEST exam as soon as possible, preferably in your freshman or sophomore year of college. Remember that the CBSET test scores are valid indefinitely. 12

CSET: Subject Matter Preparation Exams All Multiple Subject, Middle Level and Single Subject applicants must pass CSET prior to admissions. Multiple Subject and Middle Level Subtest I: Reading, Language & Literature, History and Social Science Subtest II: Science and Mathematics Subtest III: Physical Education, Human Development, Visual and Performing Arts Single Subject and Middle Level California approved subject matter program (coursework waiver if available) OR California approved CSET Single Subject exam Subject matter competency must be completed prior to admission to credential program. 13

CSET Preparation and Registration Please note that test scores are valid for only 5 years. When should I take the CSET? Our recommendation in the “Credential Programs Pathway Checklist for CSUSM Undergraduates”, is to start seriously studying for the CSET in your sophomore year and to take all parts of the CSET in your junior year. (Please see the pathway checklist for more details.) www.ctcexams.nesinc.com register online Plan ahead and Register Early We recommend using the CSET Online Tutorials from the SDCOE. http://www.sdcoe.net/human- resources/Pages/cset-training.aspx Additional test preparation resources are listed in a flyer in the Education Services Center. Also, students taking the EDUC 370 course use the CSET online tutorials low cost course text and receive instructor support. Contact John Bowman for more information. 14

Required Items 1.Three (3) letters of recommendation from faculty or others 2.Certificate of Clearance or Emergency Permit 3.TB Clearance (must remain valid throughout clinical practice placement) 4.Personal interview and writing topic 5.U.S. Constitution course or approved Exam 6.Health Education Course (i.e: PE 201 or PE 203) 7.Infant, Child and Adult CPR 15

Bilingual Authorization: Spanish Emphasis Once admitted to a credential program, candidates can also pursue a bilingual authorization that is added to their main credential. To obtain the added bilingual authorization, candidates must: Take two additional courses (one evening per week for a year): EDML 653 (3 units) & EDML 654 (3 units) Pass the Language Assessment: CSET/ LOTE III-Spanish Complete a clinical practice placements in a bilingual classroom during the credential program. 16

III. Supports for Preparing for Admissions The School of Education offers several supports and resources to help CSUSM undergraduates be fully prepared for admissions to the SOE credential programs. 17

We recommend you use the resources and supports the SOE offers to help you: Successfully complete all the required items Successfully complete all the prerequisite courses Prepare for the tests & successfully pass them (CBEST, CSET) 18

Educational Services Center Advising Visit the Educational Services center located at UH 221. The Ed Services center has a wealth of information and several advising specialists in SOE credential programs that can provide you specific information and guidance. (760-750-4277) Attend an SOE Advising/Information Session with John Bowman scheduled on the CSUSM Student Calendar for additional admission information. 19

Use the “Credential Programs Pathway Checklist for CSUSM Undergraduates” The pathway provides you with a recommended course of action for successfully completing each component needed to prepare for entering the credential programs. The pathway recommends actions to take during each one of your undergraduate years. The pathway is organized year-by-year, from your freshman to your senior year. All along the way, the pathway recommends what to work on completing each year. A credential programs pathway checklist helps you to keep track of what you have completed and what you still need to complete. EDUC 370 Pathway & CSET Support This 1 unit course is designed to support CSUSM undergraduates who are planning on entering the credential programs. In ED 370, students have access to the Multiple Subject CSET Online Test Prep tutorials which is the course text ($50) and also students have on-going instructor support for working on the credential programs pathway. This course is by permission only. If interested please email John Bowman at jbowman@csusm.edu 21
