6 People with Disabilities/ Elderly Plans. 1. Make a List Of Who Can and Will Help You Supplies in Kit 1. Hearing Aids/ Batteries 2. Medical Records and Instructions 3. List of People Who Can Help You 4. Mobility Devices

7 Amateur Radio in Disasters Terrestrial Communications Go Down ! Cellphone Networks are Overloaded ! Amateur Radio: A. Operated by Quasi-Professional, Highly Skilled Operators B. Does Not “Go Down.” C. Often the Main Communications Link 1. 2003 North American Blackout: Used a repeater placed on the Chrysler Building In NYC to be a link between Emergency Management and the public. 2. Hurricane Katrina: A. Primary Communications for American Red Cross. B. Hancock Ms. Lost all communication with outside world. HAM operators proved to be a vital link.

8 Business Continuity 40% of all businesses that close due to a disaster never reopen. Most of those that do open will be out of business within two years. 9 SAFER St. Lucie 501 (c)3 Non-profit founded in 2005. Merger - volunteer organizations active in disasters & long term disaster recovery organizations. Mission is to create a community that is equipped to bounce back more quickly after disasters. Grant/donation funded & volunteer staffed

10 SAFER St. Lucie Repaired more than 150 storm damaged homes since 2004 and mitigated nearly 500 low-income homes using volunteers. In FY16 >8,000 area residents have been educated in preparedness and mitigation. Initial focus is on those most vulnerable to disasters.
