Full Name – 5/20/2014 Homeroom Aims: SWBAT classify properties of light including refraction, reflection, absorption & visibility. Do Now: 1. Name all of the colors of the rainbow (use ROYGBIV): 2. Why are plants green? 3. Why does black clothing heat up much faster than white clothing?

Aims: SWBAT classify properties of light including refraction, reflection, absorption & visibility. Agenda: Entrance Procedures (8 min) Interacting with Light [I do] (15 min) Classifying Interactions [We do] (5 min) Classifying Interactions [You do] (15 min) Closing (5 min)

Silently pass in your Homework You have 15 seconds.

Silently pass in your Homework You have 15 seconds.

Do Now 1. Name all of the colors of the rainbow (use ROYGBIV): Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet 2. Why are plants green? They absorb (suck in) all the red and blue light, and reflect the green light. 3. Why does black clothing heat up much faster than white clothing? Black clothing absorbs all light and heat. White clothing reflects light and heat.

Hook 1) Have you ever been to a fun house of mirrors? What do they do to your reflection?

Interacting with Light (I do) DefinitionDiagram Transmission - Refraction - Reflection - Absorption - Light passes directly through an object. Light bends when it hits an object. Light bounces back from an object. Light gets completely sucked into an object.

Classifying Interactions (We do) Match each example up with what it does: ____ Eye glasses ____ Mirror ____ Glass window ____ Eyes a.Transmission b.Refraction c.Reflection d.Absorption b c a d

Classifying Interactions (You do) Directions: Classify the following objects as transmitting, refracting, reflecting or absorbing light, and explain why: 1. A fish tank: A fish tank warps the light so it’s a type of refraction. 2. Shiny metal: You can see your reflection in a shiny sheet of metal. 3. Dark clouds: Dark clouds block out and absorb all light. 4. Air: Air is clear so the light transmits straight through it.

Classifying Interactions (You do) 5. Sunglasses: Sunglasses are black because they absorb the light. If Sunglasses are mirrored there is some reflection. 6. A puddle: A puddle reflects the sky. 7. A telescope: A telescope magnifies distant objects, which is a type of refraction. 8. A glass of water: A glass of water transmits light and refracts bending it (not too much).

Classifying Interactions (You do) 9. Black t-shirt: Black t-shirts absorb all light. That’s why they’re black! 10. White t-shirt: White t-shirts reflect all light. That’s why they’re white! Challenge! Why can you see your reflection in a mirror but not in a white t-shirt? (Hint – think about how smooth or rough they both are.) MirrorT-shirt

Extension: Gravitational Lenses Galaxies A, B, C & D are all really the same galaxy, bending around the second galaxy’s core!

____ Blindfold ____ A shiny puddle ____ Clear plastic ____ Magnifying glass a.Transmission b.Refraction c.Reflection d.Absorption Exit Slip: Homework: Interacting with Light Sneak Preview!__________________ Sound! 1) Match each example up with what it does:
