Why Community Safety and not crime and disorder? The term 'community safety' is seen as having both situational and social aspects, as well as being concerned with people, communities and organisations, including families, victims, and risk groups as well as attempting to reduce particular types of crime and the fear of crime. Role and Focus of the Board Coordinate and lead on community safety issues for the county –Act as Thematic partnership for Lancashire Local Area Agreement Key Issues for 2009/10 –alcohol misuse and abuse; –domestic violence; –vulnerable families and people; –serious violent crime; and –reassure the public and reduce their fear of crime.

LCC Role Community Leadership Democratic Voice Section 17 and 17A of the Crime and Disorder Act –Duty to consider implications on: (a) crime and disorder in its area (including anti-social and other behaviour adversely affecting the local environment); and (b) the misuse of drugs, alcohol and other substances in its (c) reducing re-offending (as of 1 April 2010) –Duty to disclose to all other relevant authorities any prescribed information Support local delivery through funding

Committee Role Annual review of community safety in Lancashire (and LCC’s delivery) –Does the committee want to input into forward plan or review delivery in previous year? Scrutinise partnership delivery on specific issues Work with other public sector groups on issues e.g. Police Authority
