“A Whisper to the Reader”  What is Twain’s point in this section?  Why does he bring up Dante, a famous Italian writer?  Would you say that Twain is being really serious here? How might that tone impact the entire novel?

Chapter 1  How do the aphorisms relate to the chapter?  What is introduced to the reader?  Who are the characters Twain introduces?  How is this chapter structured as description?

Chapter 2  Aphorism- connection to the slaves Driscoll owns  How does Twain use description to create a visual of Roxy? “Wilson stepped...made her a negro”  Look back at the incident with the missing money. How is Roxy’s relationship with religion characterized? Irony? 1899 Hartford Edition of Pudd’nhead Wilson “Roxy among the Field Hands”  “They were sincere, for like a god he had stretched forth his mighty hand and closed the gates of hell against them. He knew, himself, that he had done a noble and gracious thing, and was privately well pleased with his magnanimity; and that night he set the incident down in his diary, so that his son might read it in after years, and be thereby moved to deeds of gentleness and humanity himself.”  Irony of this quote? Motif it represents?

Chapter 3  Aphorism and its relation to Roxy?  What does Roxy plan to do to the baby and herself?  Why does she make the switch?  What justification does Roxy give herself for making the switch?  What does Roxy seem to know about Wilson that no one else does?  What does Wilson do at the end of the chapter? Why does that matter?

Chapter 4  What is ‘Tom’ like as a baby? (FYI: dropping quotations for names- just know they switched!)  How are the upbringings of Tom and Chambers compared and contrasted in this chapter? (***Nature vs. nurture motif)  Why is the quote “With her splendid common sense…she was and what he had been” is important?  How does Tom treat Chambers?  “Tom had long ago taught Roxy her place…capricious temper and vicious nature.”  Change in relationship  What motif does this represent?  How does Roxy feel when Tom is nice to her?  What happens to each character at the end of the chapter?

Chapter 5  Aphorisms relation to Tom?  How is description used in this chapter to talk about Tom?  What does Judge Driscoll think of Pudd’nhead Wilson?  How does the town respond to the letter sent by the twins?

Chapter 6  Aphorism and effect of the twins?  How is narration used in the chapter?  How is importance of social status seen in this chapter?

Chapter 7  Connection to aphorism (Think Tom and his lie…)  What does Pudd’nhead Wilson see in Tom’s room?

Comic!  On your piece of paper, create 8 panels/boxes.  Each chapter gets one box.  Draw a scene from that chapter that you feel is most important or best represents what is happening in that section.  Box # 8  Make a prediction!  Draw what you think is going to happen next.  Make it pretty! Colors REQUIRED!
