The Water Cycle : The continuous process by which water moves from the earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back. Evaporation: Liquid Water Water Vapor (Gas) Condensation: Water Vapor Liquid Water Precipitation : Liquid Water Rain, Snow, Sleet, Hail
4
The Carbon and Oxygen Cycle Producers use carbon from carbon dioxide to make the food molecules : Sugars & Starches Producers release oxygen as a result of photosynthesis. Humans release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as a result of burning oils, fossil fuels, and respiration
5
Human Impact
6
The Nitrogen Cycle Nitrogen moves from the air to the soil, into living things, and back into the air Nitrogen is a necessary building block for all living organisms. Nitrogen Fixation: the process of changing free nitrogen into a usable form of nitrogen
7
Free Nitrogen Nitrogen Fixation (nodules) Producers make food Consumers decompose Bacteria releases free nitrogen
9
Half Time! Which of the 3 cycles do you think is the most important?
11
An estuary is a semi- enclosed body of water that has a free connection with the sea.
13
Estuaries have more food for organisms, but the organisms usually have to deal with large temperature and salinity changes, high silt content and pollution.
14
The Bay is home to over 3600 living organisms!
15
Marsh dwellers are located in and around marshes. They include small fish, birds, and marsh grasses.
16
Communities are important for many reasons. They include ducks, crabs, and eelgrass. Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
17
Croaker, Spot, and menhaden use shallow water in the Bay as a nursery
18
It includes phytoplankton, bacteria, and zooplankton.
