Panama is 85 percent Roman Catholic. Traditional beliefs and practices have been maintained among the native American groups despite a history of missionization. Panama City was firmly established as the capital of the new nation. Panama City was founded in 1519 by the Spanish governor Pedro Arias de Ávila Panama declared its independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903 the city was ransacked and destroyed in 1671 by the English pirate Sir Henry Morgan, leaving only the stone ruins of Panamá Viejo.

In Panama City you will find many people speaking English, especially the workers at the airport, hotels and in some restaurants. the Locals speak Spanish.
