1 Safety Moment – Tyre Safety
Title slide Keep the title brief and to one line? The second line (in smaller type style) is for the date of the presentation – depending on your presentation, you may also need to include Location and/or Presenter’s name/s and Job title if needed – as a such a second line may be used for these purposes. Do not include unnecessary information in your presentation title – starting off with clear and simple messages will set the style and focus the audience for what is to follow.

2 Tyres are your friends…
A car is probably the most dangerous piece of equipment that you will regularly use – for Business or Pleasure Tyres are normally the only part of the car that touches the road… Contact with the road for a modern car that weighs circa 2 tonnes is comparatively small. RoSPA quote the following” “The actual area of contact between the car and the road through the tyres is small, roughly equivalent to four size eight men's shoes”

3 Cars are changing… Modern cars have increasingly large tyres and smaller gaps between the tyre and wheel arch – predominantly for aesthetic purposes……. Its very easy to overlook tyre wear on the middle/ inside edge of the tyre… Modern cars often have “variable” service intervals – they are not always 6000 / miles – my first service was at 19762m As such, the opportunity for the Service Department to check for faulty tyres is diminishing… This was a tyre from my car….

4 It looked OK from the side…

5 But was a potential death-trap…

6 Please check your tyres regularly…
I was lucky – my unsafe tyres were immediately replaced I was told by the Manager of my local ATS Tyre Centre that: This level of “tyre abuse” is on the increase – especially in company cars I was lucky to be alive I committed to share my “near miss” with others – hence this brief presentation Some statistics… The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 10,000 injuries and deaths in the US could be prevented annually by monitoring tyre pressure; On a wet road the difference in stopping distance for new and worn tyres can be about one cars length – potentially the difference between braking safely and having a crash Six per cent of all fatal motorway accidents are caused by the sudden failure of under inflated tyres and worn tyres contribute to 10% of accidents in the wet

7 A final word… On the race track, the performance of my tyres can make the difference between winning and losing. On the road, the performance of your tyres could make the difference between living and dying. Check your tyre pressure and condition regularly and stay safe on the Road Michael Schumacher
