2
Driving Innovation Innovation The successful exploitation of new ideas
3
Driving Innovation What is the Technology Strategy Board? “The UK’s Innovation Agency” Set up in 2007 to invest in business-led innovation, promoting the application of science & technology £750m over 3 years (plus co-funding of over £300m from RCs, as well as other co-funders) Budget for 2011-12 to 2014-15 > £1bn Working across business, public sector, academia, regional and central government Staffed mainly from the private sector
4
Driving Innovation Prioritisation Is there a global market to sell into? Do we have companies in the UK capable of taking the strategy forwards? Is Technology Strategy Board support needed to take it forwards? Is the time to do it now or is it unfortunately too late or perhaps too early?

Driving Innovation
7
Key business opportunity focus 2011-2015: Sustainable energy through affordable and secure sources of supply Integrate future demand and energy supply into a flexible, secure and resilient energy system Reduce emissions at point of use
8
Driving Innovation Technology strategy in grid balancing, management and infrastructure: focus on research that will develop products and services across the future grid fund R&D to underpin and build on our other Technology Strategy Board energy- related programmes use our programmes, networks and knowledge transfer activities to build the interdisciplinary collaborations required to ensure a flexible, secure and resilient energy system.
9
Driving Innovation Power electronics – enabling a resilient energy system A £5.4m programme with co-funding from Welsh Government and EPSRC Aims – to connect the power electronics community with the energy sector through innovative technologies –to promote cross sector innovation and knowledge transfer –to harness business opportunities for UK companies –To bring together UK expertise, both now and in the future
10
Driving Innovation Why? Building on recent reports and recommendations from BIS, LCICG, community engagement Key to enabling a future resilient energy system; e.g. increased renewables, European supergrid, community energy systems, smart vehicle charging Business opportunities flowing down from energy policy drivers Challenge led approach - technology agnostic, application specific
11
Driving Innovation What is the programme? Strand 1 – CR&D competition, up to £2.4m TSB funding available Strand 2 – early stage industrial technical feasibility studies, up to £2m available Strand 3 - Thematic KTP call joint with Welsh Government and EPSRC, up to £1m available All strands open on 4 th February 2013 All strands briefing and brokering day on 13 th February 2013 in Birmingham

Driving Innovation Strand 1 – CR&D Two stage CR&D competition up to £2.4m Key features –Must be collaborative, business led and have end users as part of the project –Focus on industrial research with total project costs between £500k - £1m, lasting 2 to 3 years Key dates –Registration deadline noon 13 th March –Expression of interest noon 20 th March –Stage two (for invited applications) opens 15 th April –Deadline for stage two submissions noon 29 th May
14
Driving Innovation Strand 2 – feasibility Single stage competition up to £2m Key features –Early stage technical feasibility studies, must be led by business, single company or collaborative – Total project costs between £125k and £175k, up to 12 months Key dates –Registration deadline noon 13 th March –Application deadline noon 20 th March
15
Driving Innovation Strand 3 – KTP Thematic KTP competition up to £1m Key features –Embedding innovation in companies looking to solve business problems by accessing UK based knowledge and skills –A partnership between a business, academic institution and a recently qualified person –Typical annual project costs £60k with a third being contributed by the company (for SMEs) Key dates –Deadline for applications noon 19 th June for final Partnership Approvals Group (PAG) meeting –Funding outcomes August 2013
16
Driving Innovation Scope Focus on innovation in power electronics Clearly address one or more of the seven challenge areas Identify clear business opportunities for the UK (national/international) Encouraging ideas that look at cross sector working e.g. transport working with energy
17
Driving Innovation Challenges (1/2) development of power electronics devices, components, converters and systems that ensure distribution networks are able to accommodate increasing levels of embedded generation and emerging technologies innovative materials, device, component and monitoring technologies that can help improve system performance and manage reliability by reducing costs, losses, and the need for maintenance of systems that are required to operate in a range of extreme environments systems approaches to reduce costs, enable simpler systems through standardisation – including development of appropriate ICT embedded systems, control systems and early stage design devices, components, products and processes that can be transferred from other markets and can meet the challenges of the energy sector
18
Driving Innovation Challenges (2/2) development of MW power electronics devices, components, converters and systems for the conversion of variable voltage inputs into fixed voltage for connection to the grid from new renewable generation plants – including aggregated community scale renewables. Development of MW-scale converters in Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) to support the existing AC grid. high voltage DC systems using GW-scale power electronics converters to boost voltages for transmission over long distances – for application in offshore wind and the European supergrid.
19
Driving Innovation Deliverables A tangible outcome, e.g. –Small scale technology demonstration –Pilot system or process demonstrator We will be working beyond the competition phase to follow up on events and community building, e.g. –Collaboration Nation in 2014, including CR&D and KTP progress updates –Working with stakeholders to develop the community
20
Driving Innovation Out of scope In-vehicle power electronics technologies that are not translatable into the challenges highlighted (this is covered by our low carbon vehicle programme) Development of “smart home” power electronics-related applications that are not translatable into the challenges highlighted (this is covered by our low impact building programme)
21
Driving Innovation Key dates – note all deadlines are noon CR&D and feasibility Registration deadline for CR&D and feasibility 13 th March Submission deadline for EOI stage CR&D applications 20 th March Submission deadline for feasibility applications 20 th March Stage 2 CR&D opens for invited applicants 15 th April Submission deadline for invited CR&D applications 29 th May KTP Submission deadlines for applications 19 th June Partnership Approvals Group meeting 11 th July Funding outcomes and cohort membership announced August 2013
