MAP TAP 2002-2003The Layers of the Earth 1 The Layers of Earth

The Layers of the Earth2 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Inner Core Outer Core Mantle Crust

The Layers of the Earth3 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Crust The Earth's outermost surface is called the crust. The crust is typically about 25 miles thick beneath continents, and about 6.5 miles thick beneath oceans. The crust is relatively light and brittle. Most earthquakes occur within the crust Is made up of the Crust and the Moho. is the dividing line between the Crust and the Mantle.

The Layers of the Earth4 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Lithosphere Is made up of the Crust and the Moho. Brittle uppermost shell of the earth, broken into a number of tectonic plates The thickness of the lithosphere varies from to around 1 mi at the mid-ocean ridges to approximately 80 mi beneath older oceanic crust.

The Layers of the Earth5 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Mantle The region just below the crust. The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth. Extends all the way down to the Earth's core. The mantle is relatively flexible so it flows instead of fracturing. The mantle is divided into two regions: the upper and lower sections is the outer layer of the mantle.

The Layers of the Earth6 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Asthenosphere Is the outer layer of the mantle. Characterized by low-density, partially molten rock material The upper part of the asthenosphere is believed to be the zone upon which the great rigid and brittle lithospheric plates of the earth's crust move about. Located between 45—155 miles beneath the earth's surface.

The Layers of the Earth7 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Core Beneath the mantle is the Earth's core. The Earth's core consists of a fluid outer core and a solid inner core.

The Layers of the Earth8 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Outer Core The core of the Earth is like a ball of very hot metals. The outer core is liquid. The outer core is made up of iron and is very dense. Because the outer core contains iron, when it flows it generates a magnetic field. This is the source of the Earth's magnetic field. 1,800 - 3,200 miles below surface

The Layers of the Earth9 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Inner Core The inner core of the Earth has temperatures and pressures so great that the metals are squeezed together and are not able to move. The inner core is a solid. 3,200 - 3,960 miles

The Layers of the Earth12 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Extra Because the core is so hot, it radiates a natural heat to the upper layers. Because of this a current of heat comes into being. Those are also known as the convection currents. The convection currents cause the movement of the tectonic plates. This movement is called plate tectonics. The outer core and the inner core together cause the earth's magnetism. Because the earth rotates, the outer core spins, the inner core doesn't spin because it's solid. This gives a kind of dynamo effect and causes the earth's magnetism. Magnetism has been used by sailors to find their way on earth for thousands and thousands of years. Magnetism also influences electro-particles outside the atmosphere of the earth, up to more than 37,000 miles (60,000 km) into spaceconvection currents plate tectonics

The Layers of the Earth13 MAP TAP 2002-2003 Make the Inner Core – Malted Milk Ball Outer Core – Cool Whip Mantle – Double Stuffed Oreo Athenoshpere – Vanilla Ice Cream Moho – Magic Shell Lithoshpere – Cool Whip Crust – Crushed Oreos Have the students use 9 oz. clear cups to create the Earth. Put the students in groups. Have the students do a write about their activity.
