3 What is Criminal Justice? The manner by which society controls crime.

4 What is Crime? An act or an omission that is prohibited by law, punishable by incarceration, fine, restriction of liberty, or a combination of these.

5 How does crime affect you directly? Burglary Theft Assault YOU ARE THE VICTIM

6 What percent of American households are victimized by crime each year? 25%

7 How does crime affect you indirectly? We pay higher taxes to pay for prisons, courts, appointed attorney’s, etc… You pay more for items at the store.

8 Where do we get our laws? Social Justice Customs

9 Law The form of social control that contains both rules of conduct and the structure and means to enforce the law. If we have not punishment then we have no law.

10 What are the three components that make up the Criminal Justice System? Law enforcement Courts Corrections

11 Auxiliary Components Probation Parole Juvenile Justice

12 Interdependent All components of the criminal justice system are interdependent on each other.

13 What is discretion? The power to make decisions within certain legal limits, using ones own judgement. Has an officer ever used discretion when dealing with you?
