8. BEGINNINGS OF A FEMINIST/GENDER ANALYSIS – THIS CHAPTER (ALONG WITH THE PREVIOUS ONE) RAISES A NUMBER OF ISSUES REGARDING THE ROLE OF WOMEN. WITH THIS IN MIND, LET’S CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: How does the novel illuminate the traditional roles and expectations of women? How does it support them? How do Dounia and Sonia fulfill both similar and contradictory roles? Explain the differences between male and female responses toward values and behaviors as we see them in the novel. Do these differences seem to be biological or sociological? Compare and contrast the mothering styles of Katerina Ivanovna and Pulcheria Alexandrovna.
