What can we learn in a supermarket? An intercultural dialogue of young Europeans Connection of social index and kind of supermarkets in Berlin

Question  Is there a connection between the social index of a certain city of Berlin and the kind of the supermarkets? These three areas were examined in Berlin, all located in districts of former West Berlin.  - Dahlem / Schmargendorf (very high social index after the LOR / GIS)  - Mid-Neukölln / Rollberg quarter (very low social index)  - The catchment area school / Lichtenrade (mixed / medium social index)

Our theory  In the area of high social index outweigh the higher-priced supermarkets and there are more deli or organic markets.  In the area of low social index outweigh the Discounter.

Investigation arrangement:  We were looking for stores that were in the corresponding "zip codes". We looked at the following branches to www.kaufDa.de chains:  Discounter Lidl, Aldi, Netto discount stores  Supermarkets: Edeka / Reichelt, Emperor, Rewe  Organic stores (various provider): for example BioCompany, LPG, health food store  Deli (food only), Butter Lindner

Discounter  Small range of goods  merchandise presentation simple  relatively small retail outlets

 bigger range of goods  they focus a little bit more on merchandise presentation as the discounter

 huge range of goods  huge effort in merchandise presentation

Lichtenrade

 The CZO is located in Lichtenrade, a southern district of Berlin which historical part consists of calm middle-class residential areas where most of the school’s students live.  During the 1960’s and 1970’s two multi-storey building areas with council flats have been built near by.  A large amount of its inhabitants are foreign born or are descendants of immigrants with only little education. Among the population of this area exists a high rate of unemployment accompanied by poverty.

 Lichtenrade, so the environment of the school, is a socially-mixed residential area. Also reflected in the Variety of different supermarkets or discount stores.
