Reorganization Plan for Learning Services Department Spring 2015

Math Lab (2500 bldg.) located next to the gym. Reading/Writing Lab located in the 1600 bldg. Language Lab located in the 300 bldg. 1999 – 4200 sq. ft. extension to the north side of the Spencer Library and Media Center: Learning Support Services. Each lab has its own coordinator who hires, trains, and evaluates tutors. Background

The labs have been separate and operated by their respective departments, and they have been grouped together under one academic dean. There have been problems with both systems. There have been concerns about the inconsistency of tutor qualifications and effectiveness. Students have been caught in the middle. Background cont.

Supervise the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Learning Services Labs; assure availability of necessary materials and maintain an appropriate learning environment; establish and monitor lab schedules to optimize tutor availability and student participation. Learning Services Specialist

Recruit, screen, select, train, assign, evaluate, discipline, schedule, promote and terminate tutors. Meet and confer with department chairs/coordinators and department faculty to establish and implement program standards, policies and procedures. Promote Learning Services programs and services throughout the College. Learning Services Specialist

Possess a master’s degree in any master’s degree level discipline in which learning assistance or tutoring is provided at the college; -OR- Possess a Master’s degree in education, educational psychology, or instructional psychology, or other master’s degree with emphasis in adult learning theory. Phase 1 is the development and approval of the reorganization plan. Academic Senate has jurisdiction over academic and professional matters. Academic Senate agenda for May 6 (1 st reading) and May 20 (2 nd reading). Board of Trustees agenda for June 17. Phase I Implementation

Phase 2 will take place throughout the 2015-16 academic school year. Human Resources Office will work with affected employees and CSEA and CCA/CTA/NEA respectively to ensure appropriate notifications and processes for layoff. Phase 3 and Phase 4 activities will be entered into the program review process for the 2016-17 school year. Phase 2 Implementation

Phase 3 will cover the physical adjustments to the 2600 bldg. to accommodate the inclusion of all tutoring services. Phase 4 will cover the physical remodeling and computer set up for the 2500 bldg. and the Library Annex. The reorganized Learning Services Department will initiate services in Fall 2016.
