2 Methodology Scope- 3 iPad 2s available for staff use. Purpose.. provide reference services aid in information literacy efforts support collection development efforts

4 understand how the iPad can support student success initiatives, library research, faculty/librarian productivity, and information literacy. Participating librarians will increase their knowledge of and skills in managing emerging tablet technologies. Outcomes

7 The Pilot Project-cont... 3-week reference desk launch (full-time testing of iPad)... Successfully completed the following... Assisted students with downloading of ebooks from library collections. Conducted online chat reference transactions via LivePerson app.

8 The Pilot Project-cont... assisted students with purchase and downloading of e-textbooks. provided roving reference to students in the stacks. utilized bluetooth keyboard and stylus.

9 Conclusions iPad Pilot Project takeaways... iPad is a 1-to-1 device. iPad serves well as an e-textbook reader. iPad offers cross-platform versatility.

10 Conclusions-cont... the iPad is a powerful, flexible enhancement device. the iPad offers continuity of service (roving reference/chat). the iPad offers great potential for creating "on-the-fly" tutorials with apps such as "ShowMe".

11 Reference Service Enhancements student research support-including ebooks; lower-cost e-textbooks; Films on Demand;ejournals and mobile catalog searching. librarian productivity-including Facetime meetings; collection development; note- taking.

12 Reference Service Enhancements accessibility features-including text enlargement; voice-over apps. creativity-including Prezi and ShowMe apps. portability, instant-on, and long battery life provide point of need access to resources.

13 Recommendations Our recommendations to move forward include... Adoption of 1-to-1 ratio for all reference librarians. Possible loan program to students.

14 Recommendations - cont... Shift to e-textbook adoption across curriculum. Incentivized iPad rollout to all incoming freshman...

15 iPad incentive ideas freshman students would be given an iPad and if they graduate on time with a degree or certificate, the iPad would go home with them. iPad preloaded with "success" tools- (bookmarks for critical college pages, BlackBoard app, library mobile page, catalog, databases, and college registration system).

16 iPad incentive ideas-cont... student productivity apps (note-taking, math, science, etc..) access to support services, including counseling, library, tutoring, advisors would be possible with FaceTime app preloaded.

17 iPad incentive ideas-cont... move to e-textbooks and pre-loading of e- textbooks would save hundreds of dollars for students and make tuition more affordable.
