Options available to you Sitting here as a high school student, have you thought about what you want to do when you grow up? Have you thought about how you will get there? This presentation will provide you with some basic information on the many postsecondary options available to you

What is your path?

So, what comes after high school? A variety of options are available to you- College Community College 4-year College or University Career/Trade School Apprenticeship Military 13 th Year Employment

College Community College- 2 year public institutions Offers certificates and Associate’s degrees Many participate in the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) Benefits- More affordable Smaller class sizes A variety of scheduling options

College 4-Year College or University- Offers Bachelor’s degree and many offer graduate programs Have individual admission requirements Many participate in the MTA Benefits- Athletics A variety of academic studies Campus life

Do you have what it takes? Requirements Check with each school that you are interested in. Each has varying requirements for; GPA, essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities. Tuition Check with each school that you are interested in. Know the difference between: Public and Private Schools Financial Aid (FAFSA) Scholarship Opportunities Transfer Credit Options

Career and Trade Schools Typically completed in under 2 years Provide job specific training In areas such as: Health Electrical Automotive Design Leads to a certificate, diploma, or degree

Apprenticeship On the job training Students will spend a few years studying for a specific trade in both the classroom and in the work place. Students will learn most currently used methods. Wages increase in planned schedule, upon completion of various steps in your apprenticeship.

Registered Apprenticeship Typical registered apprenticeships last 2-6 years These apprenticeships lead to: Becoming a nationally recognized and trained worker Increased wages

Military 5 branches Air Force Army Coast Guard Marine Corp Navy

Roles in the Military Service member High School Diploma Typically enlist right after high school Officer 4 year degree In charge of leading and managing service members

Military Requirements Each branch has various requirements but the general ones are: Age: must be 18 or older, or 17 with parental consent High School Diploma- GEDs are not always accepted Qualifying ASVAB scores Passing a Physical Boot Camp

Gap Year Year off in midst of formal education Typically between high school and college Variety of opportunities Volunteer Travel Internship/Work experience Obtain new skills

13 th Year 5 th year of high school Typically offered at private schools In Michigan: The Leelanau School- Glen Arbor, MI Great option for those who: Need to improve their academic skillset or transcript Need more personal growth/maturity

Employment Though most jobs require training or education beyond high school, there are options for those of you who want to enter the workforce right away. Some examples are: Restaurant Waiting staff Construction Worker Mailperson
