a.Every square on a map has a grid reference. This is a number (like a co-ordinate) that helps us find a place. b.Grid references always show us the bottom left hand corner of the grid square we want. c.To find it first read down the vertical line from the bottom left hand corner to find the number (45) d.Next read along the horizontal line to find the number (10) e.Finally you put them together (45,10). They must go the right way round LO: To be able to read grid references accurately Copy out the diagram and instructions below. Do this really neatly as it will be useful to have to help you with your homework

Areas on maps can be identified with a grid reference. For example the highlighted square has the grid reference 0231. The first two digit number is the easting. This is the number at the top or bottom of a map. The second two digit number is the northing. This is the number at the side of a map.
