Forms of Energy

Law of Conservation of Energy never Energy is never created or destroyed, it only changes form!

What is energy?  Energy is the ability to do work.  Work happens when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force.

Forms of Energy Stored Mechanical Energy Energy of motion to perform work. Energy of motion to perform work. The energy starts by an application of force The energy starts by an application of force  Examples: a stretched bow about to shoot an arrow, a wound up spring before it is released

Gravitational Energy produced by a falling object due to gravity. Energy produced by a falling object due to gravity. The higher the object is in elevation the more gravitational energy you have. The higher the object is in elevation the more gravitational energy you have.  Example: Rock resting at top of a hill Rock resting at top of a hill Water in the reservoir above Water in the reservoir above a hydroelectric dam (before it falls)

Motion Energy - If the energy is being used (rock starts rolling downhill, arrow has been shot, water is falling) then we call it “motion energy”.

Electrical Energy - Energy of moving electrons (negatively charged particles) charged particles) - Electrons move back and forth through - Electrons move back and forth through a wire to produce electricity a wire to produce electricity - Electrical energy is generated at electric power plants electric power plants - Electrical outlets supply electrical - Electrical outlets supply electrical energy energy - Lightning is an example of electrical energy - Lightning is an example of electrical energy

Sound Energy Produced when a force causes an object to vibrate and energy moves throughout the object. The energy is transferred to the air around it causing the small particles to vibrate and transmit energy from particle to particle. This ultimately causes your ear drum to vibrate which allow you to hear the sound. Produced when a force causes an object to vibrate and energy moves throughout the object. The energy is transferred to the air around it causing the small particles to vibrate and transmit energy from particle to particle. This ultimately causes your ear drum to vibrate which allow you to hear the sound. Air, water, solids and wood can transmit sound. Ringing a bell is an example of sound energy. Air, water, solids and wood can transmit sound. Ringing a bell is an example of sound energy.

Heat or Thermal Energy Produced by the total energy of the particles that make up an object Produced by the total energy of the particles that make up an object The higher the temperature the more kinetic energy, therefore the more heat/thermal energy there is. The lower the temperature, the less kinetic energy, therefore, the less heat/thermal energy there is. Geothermal (energy that comes from deep within the Earth.)

Radiant or Light Energy Energy produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles. Energy produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles.  Examples: Includes visible light, also some that are invisible such as x-rays and radio waves Includes visible light, also some that are invisible such as x-rays and radio waves Can be transmitted through a vacuum like space. Type: solar Can be transmitted through a vacuum like space. Type: solar

Chemical Energy The energy stored in a substance that can be released when the substance reacts. The energy stored in a substance that can be released when the substance reacts. When you have a chemical change, a substance reacts to form a new substance. When you have a chemical change, a substance reacts to form a new substance.

 Examples: When you burn wood, chemical energy is released. This energy is used to roast marshmallows. The sugar in the marshmallows also has chemical energy that gets absorbed by your body. Battery; there are chemicals inside to produce a chemical reaction. Types: Biomass, oil or petroleum. Battery; there are chemicals inside to produce a chemical reaction. Types: Biomass, oil or petroleum.

Nuclear Energy The energy that can be released by the changes to the nucleus of an atom The energy that can be released by the changes to the nucleus of an atom This can be created when 2 atoms join together (fusion) or when an atom is split apart (fission). This can be created when 2 atoms join together (fusion) or when an atom is split apart (fission).

 Examples: The sun uses fusion to produce light and heat energy The sun uses fusion to produce light and heat energy Nuclear energy is transformed into electrical energy at nuclear power plants. Nuclear energy is transformed into electrical energy at nuclear power plants.

 The higher the object is in elevation the more gravitational energy you.  Example: Rock sitting at the top of a hill.
