1
Balance, Proportion and Scale Closely related in floral design.
2
Balance Physical balance Visual balance
3
Physical Balance Often called mechanical balance, because it refers to the idea that the arrangement is mechanically sound and is able to stand on its own. (Stable and self supporting) Containers need to be the proper size, shape, weight for the flowers that they will hold. Also it helps when you pay attention to where the flowers and foliage are placed. They need to be evenly distributed.
4
Easily falls over Or looks like it will easily tip over
5
Visual Balance Symmetrical balance Asymmetrical balance Radial balance Open balance
7
Symmetrical balance Simplest to identify and create Achieved when identical flowers and foliage are arranged and repeated on both sides. Formal in nature/feeling
9
Asymmetrical balance More complex to make Visual weight is equal Requires more thought and imagination More interesting because the arrangement has interest on both sides with different elements and various placements. Informal, more casual Color, shapes and textures, size and position
11
Using an imaginary central axis, one side of the arrangement is the mirror image of the other. Formed by placing unequal visual weight on each side of a central vertical axis.
12
Radial Balance All elements radiate from a common central point Like spokes on a wheel and rays of the sun Can be part of a sym or asym design. Having a strong radial balance in a floral design provides an immediate and obvious focal point
14
Open Balance Common in contemporary designs Usually an unconstructed manner Doesn’t follow any format or rules but does rely on a perceived balance
16
Proportion The GENERAL rule that states arrangements are 1.5 – 2 times the height of a tall container and 1.5 – 2 times the width of a low container.
17
When assessing proportion, you need to evaluate the 4 parts of an arrangement to each other. Flowers to flowers Flowers to foliage Flowers to container and the selected accessories.
18
Scale The size relationship of items around an arrangement. –The arrangement to the surroundings
