2 Carbon has electrons in its energy level.

3  The carbon family consists of one nonmetal carbon, two metalloids silicon and germanium and two metals tin and lead.  Carbon family elements contain atoms that have 4 electrons in their outer energy level.  Carbon family elements exist free in nature and in compounds.  As you move down the periodic table in the carbon family the atomic radius increases while ionization energy decreases.

4  Common uses for tin is building roofs on houses.  Silicon is used to make many electronic devices, such as transistors, integrated circuits, computer chips and solar cells.  Germanium is used in electric guitar amplifiers.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFBwViSU4nM&safety_mode=true&persist_safety _mode=1&safe=active http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFBwViSU4nM&safety_mode=true&persist_safety _mode=1&safe=active

5  Carbon is derived from the Latin root word carbo, which means charcoal or coal. There is no recorded history of the actual person or country that selected the name for this element.
