2 Analogy ●from the Greek word for “proportionate” ●rhetorical device used to compare two things ●used in order to clarify the subject's nature, purpose, or function ●Examples: o “ Her as eyes were as blue as the summer sky.” o “ The snow is a white blanket.”

3 ●passing reference in a work of literature to another literary or historical work, figure, or event, or to a literary passage. ●rhetorical device ●examples: ○ “I was surprised his nose was not growing like Pinocchio’s.” ○ “He was a real Romeo with the ladies.” ○ “Chocolate was her Achilles’ heel.” Allusion

4 Diction ●Describes the word choice and phrasing in a literary work. ●Different kinds- o Colloquial- informal (Y’all) o Formal- Thou, ye o abstract- language that does not create an image (Love, emotions) o concrete- describes physical conditions (Dog, Tree) ●Rhetorical device ●Example- "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate:” -Shows formal diction ●Example of Concrete- o “I waited at my house for my friend Jack to bring me the $10 he owes me”- concrete o “I waited for my friend to bring the money.” -not concrete
