4 Outbreak of War 1914, terrorist kills Archduke of Austria-Hungary Europeans went to war Allied Powers: Russia, France, Great Britain Central Powers: Germany and Austria-Hungary Archduke Ferdinand on day of assassination

5 United States War at sea initiated US involvement –Americans initially supplied both the Allies and the Central Powers –Blockade brought sinking of US ships –German submarine sank the British Ship, Lusitania (many U.S. citizens died)

6 Zimmerman Note Germany tried to persuade Mexico to join the war Note said that Germany would help Mexico get back New Mexico, Texas and Arizona U.S. gets angry and enters the war
