8 GLYCOLYSIS – the conversion of glucose to pyruvate takes place in the cytoplasm does not require oxygen (anaerobic) glucose is a stable molecule so it must be activated by ATP ATP adds 2 phosphate molecules (phosphorylation) which causes the glucose molecule to break into 2 2 pyruvate molecules are the result if oxygen is not present, pyruvate will accumulate and lactate (lactic acid) will be formed in animals, releasing another ATP (X2) = fermentation = muscle cramps Don’t forget with yeasts we get ethanol = alcoholic drinks, sauerkraut, bread rising……
