Keynote speaker: Dominic Meinardi Advanced wastewater monitoring for industrial zones with mobile monitoring units (MobiLabs) K.U. Rudolph, W. Genthe, S. Kreuter, F. Friedrichs, D. Meinardi
2
Introduction - Experiences from Tra Noc Industrial Zone - Mobile monitoring units (MobiLabs) - Key parameter - Summary of potential and advantages
3
-Seafood -Food/Beverage -Metal/Steel production -Pharmaceutics -Pesticides -Fertilizer -Textile -Leather -Shoes -Petrol industry Tra Noc I+II IZ (290ha) – ca. 130 Companies ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary
4
Waste water treatment in Tra Noc I+II -By now Tra Noc has just a open surface drainage and no WWTP -A centralized WWTP for Tra Noc II and sewer system is under construction -Operation planned for 12/2014 (Tra Noc I remains disconnected) -Wastewater discharges direct to the drainage or river -The drainage system releases direct to the environment -Wastewater treatment by the companies is mostly ineffective -Total wastewater (estim.) 12.000-20.000 m 3 /day
5
ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary Information demand Data collection Data analysis Reporting -Technological and economical planning requires a reliable database on wastewater information -Monitoring gives information on the status quo and the extend and direction of changes -Monitoring provides necessary information for sound decision making Why monitoring
7
ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary Monitoring in Tra Noc But reality is different... -The drainage is strongly influenced by the tidal range (2 m amplitude) -Intense rain events and floods affect results -Irregular inflows and mixed data sources cover up clear correlations contamination effect of contamination concentration of contamination drainage
8
ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary Mobile Monitoring Units (MobiLabs) To facilitate monitoring activities, the AKIZ research project established two mobile monitoring units
9
MobiLab features Transportable as trailer or attached to a truck Operation on the spot Automatic sample collection Real time data Online data transfer Meteorological station Camera surveillance Power generator ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary
10
MobiLab parameter Online Measurements Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Total Nitrogen bound (TNb) Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) Toxicity Ammonium (NH 4 -N) pH value Conductivity Redox potential Meteorological data ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary
13
MobiLab potential Toxicity monitoring
14
ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary MobiLab potential Toxicity monitoring
15
MobiLab potential NH4-N monitoring ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary
16
MobiLab potential TOC monitoring
17
MobiLab advantages -Comprehensive and durable surveillance (24/7) -Focusing on parameter serving as indicator -Automatic sampling based on time interval, discharge or exceedance of threshold values -Reference samples and retention samples can be taken -Immediate results, Hazard warning -Equipment can be adapted according to current demand ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary
18
MobiLab consequent advantages -Higher efficiency of sampling -Better understanding of correlations -Thorough observation allows immediate response -Improved identification of perpetrator -Support for adjustments on waste water treatment -Reduced labor for the stationary Laboratory
19
ExperiencesMobiLabsKey parameterSummary AKIZ MobiLab future -One MobiLab in Hanoi for monitoring and capacity building with VNU-HUS and VIIC -One MobiLab in Can Tho for ongoing monitoring, also in other industrial zones -Another MobiLab is in process of planning, based on lessons learned in Vietnam
