The Animal Kingdom What characteristics do all animals share? How are animals classified? “See ya Later!
2
What defines an animal? 1) all animals are multicellular eukaryotes 2) Animals have specialized cells for things such as digestion, vision, taste, and reproducing 3) All animals have the protein collagen surrounding cells to help them keep their shape 4) All animals eat other organisms 5) All animals digest their food

4
Classification – If it has a back bone, it is a vertebrate. If not, it’s an invertebrate
5
Classification can show relationships – note the categories for this one Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Artiodactyla Family: Bovidae Genus: Bos Species: taurus This is the classification of cattle
6
See how closely this animal is related to the cow on the previous slide Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Artiodactyla (even-toed, hoofed mammals) Family: Bovidae Genus: Ovis Species: aries
7
Binomial nomenclature Naming a species by its genus and species is a good way to see if animals are closely related Canis Lupus Canis Lupus Familiaris Felis Catus Felis Concolor nas platyrhynchos
