Good things about mobile access You have it. More mobile phones than PCs in the world. Mobile phone penetration is over 100% in some countries. Mobile phone will be an important part of ubiquitous computing because people have got used to it.

Good things about mobile access It’s always with you. Information is always with you at the point of need.

Good things about mobile access It’s maybe the most personal thing you have. Mobile device is more personal than personal computer. It can know your identification, time, place etc. Personalization of information.

Requirements for good user experience Efficient network -Finally there is: EDGE, UMTS (3G), WI-FI (WLAN) Efficient device -Because of tough competition between operating systems (Symbian OS, Palm, Windows Mobile) -Better screens, input methods, processors… Efficient software/webpages -Personalization. -Good human-computer interaction (HCI). -Web page must be fast to download -Not too many images.

Requirements for good user experience Easy to use. Simple navigation structure. Advanced mobile phone or PDA is actually easier to use than PC. But… -There is very little of education. -There is no possibility to try out new devices in practice.

Requirements for good user experience Inexpensive. Mobile internet connection is now much cheaper than a few years ago. GPRS-connection can be as cheap as 5 eur per month in Finland.

Terkko’s Services for Mobile Access Helka Handy: user interface to Helka (=Helsinki university library catalogue) Helka Handy -Library catalogue is available everywhere. -Keyword/Title/Author search possibilities. -Presents a positioning map of the location where the searched resource is located in the library. -Easier to use than a regular version of the database.

Information from about 1000 medical sources -Journals -News -Blogs -University of Helsinki based information Information contains a title and a link to full text. Usually also an author and an abstract. Favorite sources in the front page. Efficient search functions. Article request service.
