[2] N APLES, 20 TH D ECEMBER 2011 ::.. Performed Secondments and Activities I am an Experienced Researcher (ER) participating to WP1, WP2, and WP4. I have been seconded at CSW two times during the implementation of the project: From February to June 2011 - Seconded Researcher at Critical Software office in Coimbra (Portugal); From June to September 2010 - Seconded Researcher at Critical Software office in Oporto (Portugal); I have been involved in the following activities during my secondments: investigation of safety-related standards for the development of critical systems; study of a framework that is based on the customized quality model that will guide a proper evaluation of OTS products, and the choice of which product to use. I collaborate also with SESM on the topic of robustness testing of DDS products.

[6] N APLES, 20 TH D ECEMBER 2011 ::.. Publications My activities within the context of CSTEP have produced four publications: A. Bovenzi, S. Celentano, C. Esposito, G. Carrozza, A. Napolitano and A. Strano, “Automatic Robustness Evaluation of DDS Compliant Middleware”, OMG Workshop on Distributed Object Computing for Real-time and Embedded Systems, 22nd-24th March 2001 C. Esposito, D. Cotroneo, R. Barbosa and N. Silva, “Qualification and Selection of Off-The-Shelf components for Safety Critical Systems: a Systematic Approach”, Proceedings of the 5th Latin- American Symposium on Dependable Computing Workshops (LADCW), 25th-29th April 2011, pp. 52-57, DOI 10.1109/LADCW.2011.13 – This paper has been awarded as one of the best papers of the industrial track at the conference and included in the electronic proceedings; C. Esposito, D. Cotroneo, and N. Silva, “Investigation on Safety-related Standards for Critical Systems”, accepted to be presented at the 1st Intentional Workshop on Software Certification, held within the context of the 22nd annual International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2011); A. Napolitano, G. Carrozza, A. Bovenzi and C. Esposito, “Automatic Robustness Assessment of DDS-Compliant Middleware”, accepted to be presented at the industrial track of the 17th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing (PRDC 2011).

[7] N APLES, 20 TH D ECEMBER 2011 ::.. Training I have been involved in a Training Event of two hours with 14 attendees at the Coimbra Office of Critical Software for lecturing on the upcoming safety standard for automotive systems (ISO 26262), and Presented the Nuclear Standard IEC 60880 during Workshop on Dependability and Certification from 28th to 29th September 2011 in Coimbra (Portugal). I have attended several Training and ToK events during the first half of the project.

[8] N APLES, 20 TH D ECEMBER 2011 ::.. Experience (1/2) During my secondments, I had the possibility to interact with industry experts which have a concrete view of the usage of the techniques I have been studying on during my PhD. Such interaction gave me: Concrete examples of real use cases so to better tailor my research on the real needs experienced by industries of the field; Best industrial practices which enlarged my knowledge of the field; A goal-oriented methodology for organizing my work which allowed me to be more efficient and fast in reaching my objectives. The Training events allowed me to catch concepts that are difficult, or impossible, to obtain from books. Such as, current practice at CSW on fault injection gave me a better view of the concept of fault tolerance within space applications and currently adopted approaches for guaranteeing it.

[9] N APLES, 20 TH D ECEMBER 2011 ::.. Experience (2/2) During the project, we also had contacts with researchers of FCTUC, with the possibility of discussing interesting new research topics. E.g., the inspiring talk of prof. Henrique Madeira held during the seminar on robustness testing on 24th November 2011 at SESM introduced myself on the issue of fault prediction, which I ignored before and could become a new research topic for me.

[10] N APLES, 20 TH D ECEMBER 2011 ::.. Impact (1/2) The possible impact of my participation in CSTEP can be directly see through my resume: it allowed me to publish more interesting papers at international venues, enlarge my research topics and establish valuable collaborations. An other kind of impact is less evident: interaction with other non-Italian researchers, high number of presentations made during the first half of the project, writing deliverables have considerable improved my English capabilities both when speaking and writing; my (self-)confidence and clearness when discussing my ideas My ability of structuring concise and effective presentations.
12
[11] N APLES, 20 TH D ECEMBER 2011 ::.. Impact (2/2) Moreover, CSTEP gave me the possibility of working on completely new aspects such as project management and accounting, which enriched the spectrum of my working experiences and may represent a winning element for obtaining a new research position in the future. Despite living by myself was not a new experience for me, the secondments I did in Portugal improved myself also with respect my personal growth. Meeting a new European culture and traditions make me enforce the awareness of my European identity and citizenship.
