2 I. History From 700 to about 1200 Muslim armies gradually established control over most of northern India. By about 1200 a Turkish group had created a great Muslim empire on the subcontinent, with its capital at Delhi. In the early 1500s Babur, a descendant of Tamerlame’s establishes the Mogul or Mughal Dynasty in northern India. In the last half of the 1500, a Muslim, Akbar the Great ruled the powerful Mughal Empire in India. Timur Lenk or Tamerlane sacks Delhi 1389.Tamerlane

The Big Picture Traditional Hindu culture survived the invasions and blended with Islamic civilization. blended Sikhism is a religion that began in India the 1500s by blending elements of Islam and Hinduism. These divisions however: Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, still plague the sub-continent to this day.divisionsday Mohandas K. 10 III. Government Akbar ruled as an absolute monarch. Akbar: strengthened the central government, modernized the army, encouraged trade, and introduced land reform.

Akbar’s Reforms Eliminated the tax on non-Muslims Allowed Hindus to participate in govt. and lifted the ban on Hindu temple building Called on Muslims to respect cows Invented Din-i-ilahi (The Divine Faith) or a new religion that incorporated elements of different belief systems. Improved the calendar and dealt with poverty Discouraged childhood marriage, sati, and the seclusion of upper-class womensati (Several women exercised power behind the scenes as their husbands became addicted to opium and alcohol)

13 V. Decline Akbar’s successors were unable to control India’s unruly rajas or princes. In conquering India the British use a divide and conquer strategy. The British control India from the about the 19 th century to 1947.
