How does the Society see Police Officers? Role Expectations- Behavior and actions that people expect from people in a particular role Role Conflict- Psychological stress and frustration that results from trying to perform 2 or more impossible responsibilities

Community Leader Possesses Broad Discretion (What is that?) Solves sociological and technological problems for people on a short term basis Occasionally serves in Hostile and Dangerous environments

Quick Decision Making Independent Nature of Police Work- work alone on the street Dirty Work- handling sick people Danger- circumstances- arrest attempts, ambush, traffic pursuit, robberies, burglars, disturbance calls

Approach to the Police Job James Q Wilson Style’s Legalistic- use of threats or actual arrest to solve disputes, more arrested (safer community) Watchman- resolving disputes without arrest, (found in poor towns) Service Style- Help the community instead of enforcing the law (Rich Communities)

John Broderick- degrees of commitment to maintain order and due process Enforcer- emphasis on order not due process Idealist- emphasis on social order and due process Optimist- Due Process is number 1 little social order Realist- little emphasis of either

William Muir’s Professionals- must have passion and perspective to be a good police officer Enforcers- passive to respond to human problems, but does not recognize limits with power to resolve problems Reciprocators- have perspective, no passion Avoiders- no passion, no perspective, no recognition of peoples problems, no action
