Deforestation in Southeast Asia Global Connections

Borneo Case Study

Global Connections

1. Oil Palm Plantations The rapid expansion of oil palm plantations has led deforestation to skyrocket in Malaysia and Indonesia. In fact, oil palm agriculture acts as the leading threat to biodiversity across Southeast Asia Palm oil is an ingredient in numerous products from foods to cosmetics, and it has even been heralded as a biofuel. Large areas of forests have been destroyed

2. Harvesting Timber Harvesting timber -- often through illegal logging -- remains a serious threat to Southeast Asian islands like Malaysia

3. Forest Fires Forest fires act as a driver of deforestation in Malaysia, but these fires frequently stem from human activities such as clearing land for oil palm plantations and other slash- and-burn agriculture In other words, fires intended to be controlled often grow out of control

Mining Mining also contributes to the degradation of Malaysia's natural forests

5. Ecotourism In some areas of Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, etc, tourism has led to deforestation to create facilities such as resorts.

Other Pressures Commercial Pressures: Huge economic gain for country. Demand for palm oil, pulp, and plywood. Regulatory Mismanagement: SE Asian government are not making regulations of forests a priority International Assistance: Lack of assistance from other developed nations

Why is this issue so significant???

Hurts Physical Environment Deforestation affects the earth's physical environment by causing soil erosion, poor water quality, reduced food security and impaired flood protection. Remember Bangladesh!!! Because forests are the source of employment and food for many people, their destruction can cause mass migration to cities. Alter weather patterns like typhoons, tsunami, etc

Biological Diversity When massive forest regions are destroyed, species loss follows. When the habitat for plants and animals is cut down or burned, species that may not be present anywhere else on Earth disappear Bird migrations changing as weather patterns change

Climate Change Deforestation is a main cause of the higher concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In particular, deforestation causes high levels of carbon dioxide: it is released when forests are burned or when they decompose, and when trees that used to take in this carbon dioxide are cut down, levels rise
